Before leaving Yacka proper on the day after ANZAC day, we did a quick lap of the town and then drove on, to Gladstone and Port Pirie, where the woman at the tourist information centre informed us that the drive to Port August was a nicer one via Melrose than along the coast so off we went to Port Germein to have a look at the Jetty before making our way to Melrose. The sun was shining but it was very windy on the Jetty which is one of the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. It is 1532 metres long, and was longer before being damaged by storm.
We contemplated camping at Port Germein but because of the bad winds decided against it.
At Melrose, which snuggles into the base of Mount Remarkable, we had a country style lunch at Bluey Blundstones Blacksmith Shop (also a bed and breakfast).
Once more a suggestion was made, this time, that we should take Horrocks Pass on our way to Port Augusta, which we did.
The Spencer Gulf at Port Augusta was glistening but we didn't spend much time there. Our main reason for going there in the first place was to gather information regards our stay in Wilpena. As before we were advised to ask for more information regarding road conditions in each town we intended to visit before moving on to the next town. We left Port Augusta reluctantly, knowing that we would be back.
Next town Quorn, turning off to Warren Gorge for free bush camping (that is, pit toilets being the ONLY facilities) praying all the while that we would be protected from the wind.
