A National Disgrace

Daly Waters was so named by Stuart when he discovered water there in 1862.  While tourist swarmed around the Daly Waters Pub today, far fewer were visiting a site just a short distance away which may be just as significant:  The Daly Waters Aviation Complex, which seems to have been abandoned not only by the tourist but by Federal and Territorian government.
For herein lies the remains of the site of the very first international airport in Australia.

If not for a fading sign declaring that the National Trust is preparing a Conservation Plan for the site, one would be forgiven for believing that the site has been abandoned.  I believe the sign is obsolete.

At this place, prior to World War II, aeroplanes refuelled en route to London.

Today, the site seems to have been abandoned, the vegetation is moving in.

Daly Water Airport also played a role in border protection during World War II and saw Australian and American air forces based here.
